Bison

Bison
The bison farming industry in North America has been growing slowly since the early 1980's. As today's world becomes more health conscious, people are drawn towards the healthy alternative that is bison meat. The bison farming community is opposed to  the use of hormones and artificial growth stimulants. Although they often appear awkward and lethargic, these great beasts are agile and quick and can easily out-run and out-manoeuvre a horse or jump any fence a deer can. They are generally a docile creature and will allow their keeper to approach them but, being wild animals, they are often unpredictable and may charge either man or machine if they feel threatened. Bison still have their natural instincts for survival and can endure blizzards that would easily kill a herd of domestic cattle. During the winter months their dark brown coats are thick and woolly, providing ample protection from the elements. It is not uncommon for a bison to root through a deep snow cover to the grass below or even eat snow to survive a particularly harsh storm. Because these animals are not domesticated, cows do not allow or need any assistance during calving. The self-sufficient characteristic typical of bison is one that owners admire. They can survive for two or three days without water when roaming for suitable rangeland.  Bison farming is seen to be more in keeping with the indigenous North American environment than European cattle farming and has become a permanent part of  ranching

Wild Boar

Wild Boar
The wild boar is one of nine species belonging to the pig family. It is the ancestor of the domestic pig.. The wild boar was originally found in Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa. Since the 1800s they were in North America and Australia. The wild boar's mating season takes place during the winter months and can have up to twelve babies in a litter. They are born usually between March and May.  Their natural environment  wild boar is found in the coniferous forest and in the grassland. It builds its home in thickets and tall grass.  Some of the wild boar's special adaptations are its tusks and its snout. The tusks are used for protection from its predator. The snout is used for digging up soil so it can eat roots and plant bulbs.  These are mainly ranched and wild game in most place although there is some farming of wild boar in the UK and the North America.

Kangaroo

Kangaroo
Commercial culling of kangaroos is restricted to leasehold and freehold land which is being used for primary production. Such culling takes place in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. It does not occur in national parks, state forests or conservation reserves, which currently constitute over 68 million hectares or 8.9 per cent of Australia.
Kangaroo are culled in Australia by only licensed hunters. These are granted by the Government and pass a Government approved course which instructs them in aspects such as the laws controlling kangaroo culling , meat hygiene and animal welfare. In addition their equipment must be approved by a Government inspector to ensure it is of the right standards. The RSPCA has described Kangaroo harvesting as "one of the most humane methods of animal slaughter possible".

Rattle Snake

Rattle Snake
Rattlesnakes are either bred or hunted in the USA for their skin and meat, which is becoming more popular on the gourmet table.  Rattlesnake is only available from ranches in the south west of the US and culled producing a very small amount of meat. This is done under licence from the local state. Hunting wild rattlesnakes is allowed with a permit and the snake must be processed through a ASDA plant.

Musk Ox

Musk Ox

The muscox  is native to the north pole circle of Canada and Greenland. They have been close to extinction by whale hunters who shot them for fresh meat on their hunting trips. Today muscox are bred 'under supervision'. This means they are protected and only the stags that live by themselves are shot for their meat. The Canadian government has discovered that muscox are ideally kept on areas that are completely inaccessible to other animals because of the severe cold (-50 degrees Celsius). Eskimo's have always hunted the muscox as part of their culture but in more balanced level than the European hunters. There is no real muscox hunting season. Animals are shot after the mating season and only the ones which are rejected by their herd are shot..
